Once upon a time . . .

. . . castles were built in Europe and the Middle East, more or less as a fortified residence for royalty.

And . . . Belgium has more castles per square mile than anywhere else in the world. An estimated 3,000!

Here are images of just a few and according to the internet, these are all in Belgium. You don't have to go very far to see one either. Belgium is only about 1/4 the size of Louisiana. A little bigger than Massachusetts.

Pretty amazing. So we decided to visit one. Chateau de Grand-Bigard. The building itself isn't open to the public, but for four weeks each Spring, the gardens welcome visitors, including us.

And although this castle is not in Belgium, but in Scotland, perhaps we can visit it some day too.

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

I know, my videography skills have room for improvement :)

  1. Do people live in the castles?

  2. Put "visit a castle" on the list of things we want to do while we're there.

  3. Reminds me of the grounds around the Biltmore...which might be America's closest facsimile. Castles always look cold to me, but maybe they had hot water pipes in the floors to keep it toasty and cozy....but somehow I doubt it.
