Hallstatt

Hallstatt, Austria (population 900) is a remote little town on the banks of the Hallstattersee.

It is very quaint and everything is very old.

Houses are built all along the mountainside.

This is the main street in town. You can see it is barely wide enough for one vehicle.
There was a time not so long ago when this town was reachable only by boat.

It really felt like a small fishing village and was nearly deserted.

I've read that Hallstatt is one of the most photographed places in the world and I can see why.

Salt miner

The world's first known salt mine is located here and can be toured during the warmer seasons. Unfortunately we were not there when it was warm. In fact it was very cold!

This little path is the other road in town.

Strangely enough, while we were walking down this "road", this tractor and empty trailer passed us twice! We had to step into a doorway so he could pass. The trailer was always empty and all I could think of was the scene from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" when the cart comes around and the guy calls out "Bring out your dead".
