Grande Dune du Pilat

Jim is famous for taking a side road to get off the main drag and we always find something interesting when that happens.

This time we stopped at this huge sand dune.

This is at the bottom before we took the long climb up the stairs to the top.

It wasn't too crowded that day, but I can imagine it is crazy in the summer.  More than a million people visit each year.

It's so hard to tell, but those specks, way in the distance, are people.  This thing is huge!

I found this aerial photo online to help with the perspective.

These next photos I took from the top.

It's located about an hour from Bordeaux on the southwest coast . . .

on the Arcachon Bay.

This dune is about 350 feet tall and is the highest in Europe.  The tallest dune in the States, Star Dune in Colorado, is over twice as high as this one.  Wow.  But the tallest in the world is in Argentina and it's over 10 times as high as this one in France!

Anyway, it was amazing and we were so glad we stopped to check it out.  Plus, the weather was pretty great too!
