SMALL UPDATE
We recently took a road trip across northern Germany and into western Poland. We also try to take the backroads whenever possible.
Here's Winslow scoping out this huge mound of something.
We decided we should drive closer and figure out what it was.
Turns out it's salt. It's located near the town of Giessen and is a salt mine known as the Potash Siegfried-Giesen. It has been closed since 1987.
Next we saw this castle from far off and decided to find it. It's called Schloss (Castle) Derneburg and is a private family residence owned by art collector Andrew Hall. It has a very long history dating back to being a fortified castle in 1130, then to 1143 when it was an abbey. Fast forward and it was a hospital during WWII. In 1974 it became a private residence.
So, who is Andrew Hall? He's British and the former VP of British Petroleum. He lives in the US now and apparently made a killing in the oil industry and loves German art . . . and German castles.
Just around the corner from the castle was this cute little place.
We decided to get out and have a walk.
and right there - on this rural road - was a cafe.
So we stopped for coffee. This is the former greenhouse of the castle and it was built in 1830.
All these people. Where did they come from? This place is in the middle of nowhere!
The first night we stayed in the town of Magdeburg, Germany at this hotel.
It was a good stopping place on our way to Berlin.
